Emergency Lighting

Emergency Lighting.

The experienced team at Matt Browning Ltd. Electrical Contractors provide a design, installation, maintenance and routine testing service for emergency lighting systems.

Emergency Lighting Design

Emergency escape lighting is required in most workplaces, commercial buildings, and public buildings, to ensure a minimum light level along the escape route in the event of power failure or fire, to allow safe evacuation of the building. Illuminated exit signs to identify fire escape doors, and changes of direction along the escape route are also fitted.

In the event of power failure, the emergency lighting should operate automatically and remain illuminated for 3 hours. Additional emergency lighting is required at specific areas such as fire alarm panels & manual call points, disabled refuge areas, high risk task areas, machine & plant rooms, and large open areas.

In the UK the regulatory standards for emergency lighting are contained within BS5266, BS7671, Fire Safety & Regulatory Reform Order, together with various other health and safety legislation and The Building Regulations. We are qualified and experienced in emergency lighting design. Our team undertakes regular CPD training to keep up to date with the latest regulatory and technological changes.

Emergency Light Testing

It is a requirement that monthly user checks are carried out to ensure the emergency lighting system is operation. Additionally, the system should be inspected professionally every 12 months. Traditional systems have manual test switches to simulate power failure and trigger the emergency lighting – these should only affect the emergency lights, not general lighting. Newer systems or upgraded systems may have automatic testing facilities which can reduce the cost of routine testing procedures during the life of the installation.

Our Emergency Lighting test & maintenance services include:

  • Free site survey and quotation
  • Preparation of emergency lighting plans and asset register
  • Identification and inspection of each emergency light
  • 3 hour emergency lighting discharge test
  • Lux level measurement where required
  • Full emergency lighting condition report, detailing our findings
  • Emergency Lighting Plan & Test Logbook
  • Detailed quotation for any required repairs or replacements
  • For older systems or buildings with a change of use or layout, we can provide a design verification service to establish if the original emergency lighting system design meets current requirements.
