Supporting Schools with Safe Electrical Solutions
Supporting Local Schools with Safe Electrical Solutions
At Matt Browning Electrical, we’re proud to work with schools across Berkshire and the Thames Valley, helping them improve, modernise, and futureproof their electrical infrastructure.
Our in-house team of qualified electricians recently completed a series of successful projects that demonstrate the importance of planning, precision and safety when working in education environments.
Here’s a look at three recent school projects that highlight our customer service, workmanship and reliability:
Load Study & Supply Capacity Assessment
A local school approached us with a question:
Can we add new electrical equipment to our existing building?
Rather than speculate, we took a data-driven approach.
We began with a detailed survey of the electrical infrastructure and installed a data logger to monitor real-time energy use over a sustained period. After analysing the results, we were able to:
- Confirm spare capacity in the electrical supply
- Recommend adjustments to balance loads evenly across all three phases
- Offer clear, professional guidance before any equipment was added
A load study is a sensible step for sites considering adding significant new loads such as EV chargers, catering equipment, electric heating & air conditioning, and process machinery. A fundamental part of electrical design for alterations and additions is assessing the suitability of the existing installation including an assessment of supply capacity. Without it, there could be a risk of overload, power loss, and long-term equipment damage. It's also a useful way to look for energy savings - helping to spot unnecessary power usage out of hours.

Electrical Distribution Board Upgrade
During a half-term school break, we carried out an upgrade of aging electrical distribution boards to meet modern safety standards and provide additional circuit capacity for future expansion.
Key features of the project included:
- Detailed planning to fit equipment on restricted wall space and a tight timescale
- 250A Hager Panel Board
- Surge Protection Devices
- Energy monitoring
- 30mA RCD protection for additional safety
- Four new 125A Hager Distribution Boards with interlocks for classroom workshop equipment
- Removal of obsolete equipment and full inspection & testing of existing circuits
As always, our in-house team delivered the project to a fixed-price quote, completed on time, and left the building clean, safe and certified ready for students to return.

Food Technology Classroom Installation
The final part of this multi-phase project focused on upgrading teaching facilities in food technology classrooms.
We supplied and installed several new electric cookers and ran new cabling from the distribution boards on the ground floor. The work was delivered as a complete package, including:
- Appliance supply & connection
- Wiring design & installation
- Full NICEIC-certified inspection & testing to BS7671
- Completed out of hours and finished on-schedule, leaving the area clean & ready for use.
Our focus was on helping to creating a reliable, safe, and improved facilities where students can learn practical skills.
